Dressing Room Diaries

Happiest of Fridays, friends! I hope you had a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast, because it's about to get serious around here! Today marks opening day of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (the last week has been just for cardholders). For the handful of men readers out there, this is basically the equivalent of the NBA and NFL Drafts...on Super Bowl Sunday. Get my drift? It's BIG.

And lucky for you, I've got a monster-sized Dressing Room Diaries today, featuring more of my favorite finds from the sale (see Round 1 of my reviews here).

Per usual, the shots aren't good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it's expiration, and many of the items aren't a good fit for me...but it's real life, real girl, real clothes...and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model. And you'll be thrilled to know Mama Sugarplum came, too! Let's get after it, shall we?

Sidenote: Everything fits true-to-size unless I indicate otherwise. And fyi, I'm 5'4"-ish, 120 pounds-ish, with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5'2", with an hourglass figure. Her usual size is M/8.

Mama SP loved the deep blues and fringe-hem of this poncho, and even though it's one-size, it didn't overwhelm her petite frame. Can you tell she loved it?! It will be so cute with jeans and booties in the Fall, and even knee-high boots in the Winter. The tie is actually from her own blouse, though, the poncho is a drape-front.

I'm not much of a designer handbag girl (I like to switch them up too much to spend a lot on just one), but I was definitely swooning over this gorgeous cross body! The discount is huge, so if you're an investment-bag person, this is a good one to consider. You may recognize my top from yesterday's Date Night post.

I invested in a leather moto jacket during the sale last year, and couldn't believe how many times it completed my outfit throughout the season. It adds interest to basic jeans and tees, and edginess to dressier outfits like skirts and dresses. I folded the neck a little wonky in this picture, but it actually looks really cute worn either open or zipped-up.

I'm always drawn to plaid in the cooler months, and I loved the soft flannel and dark green of this top. It's cute with jeans, but would be darling with a black pencil skirt and pearls (similar to this outfit).

Fit Tip: I'm wearing an XS, but it felt a tad tight across my shoulders and armpits.

There's nothing easier or cozier to throw on in cooler months than a drapey cardigan. I loved the shawl collar and soft weave of this one. Usually I'd gravitate towards the gray one, but this orange was a fun surprise...plus it looks great with denim. Paired with a blouse, it's a great alternative to a blazer for work (with slacks), or wear it with a tee for weekends.

The floral top is a good one, too...I now have it in both pink and blue!

This cardigan with the layered ruffle trim is darling...and both mom and I loved it...our only issue was what to pair underneath. I think you'd want to keep it neutral to allow the ruffle to take centerstage...so probably an ivory shell is best. It's easily dressed up or down.

I mentioned last week that shopping with mom forced me to look in sections of the store I don't normally shop...which wasn't necessarily a good thing since her budget is higher than mine!! I fell head-over-heels with this hoodie pullover, and even though the discount is big, it's still a tad pricey for me. It's certainly worth every penny though, and I loved the banded hem and pouch pocket.

And I sang the praises for these affordable over-the-knee boots last week...read that review here.

Fit Tip: Both of us sized up for these pics.

I wanted to love this silky-soft top, but the fabric was a little thin and the arms too tight. I think if sized up, it'd be perfect for leggings.

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016

This easy-to-wear top comes in tons of colors and patterns, but I found it to run really big. My usual size is be perfect for leggings, and sized down in petites is great to wear with jeans or tucked in to skirts (see that look later in the post).

I can't say enough good things about these leggings either...super thick, keeps everything tucked in, comfortable wide waistband, and not too long. In fact, I've never worn leggings with anything other than knee-boots, but I thought this little get-up with my favorite new peep-toe booties was too cute for words! Who agrees?

Mom tried this blouse on first, and liked it so much, she insisted I try it too. I loved the intricate neckline, and the banded waist kept it from being shapeless. It's fun paired with jeans, but would be beautiful layered under a jacket or blazer.

This is one of my favorite brands for dresses (see one here)...they are so well-made and fit beautifully. This one is really soft, and skims the body subtly, so it's work-appropriate, but still flattering.

Fit Tip: I size up to a 2 in this brand, and a 2P in the maxi dresses.

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016

I picked up this dress in solid white last week, and loved it so much I had to go back for a stripe. The stripes are a ribbed material, so not as soft as the solids, but still really comfy. And hello, pockets and only $25!

Fit Tip: I can wear a small or xs, but order up if you like knee-length.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diaries

Moving on to active wear...there so many great Zella pieces (my favorite brand), it was hard to choose. I typically wear the cropped pants, but I definitely liked these longer ones for cold months...they are thicker, as well.

Fit Tip: I wear XS in Zella bottoms, and size up to a Small for tops and jackets for more room for movement.

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016

I couldn't believe the price of this North Face pullover...if you're a fan of their fleece tops, now is definitely the time to grab another! It comes in 7 great colors.

Fit Tip: I prefer mine to fit loose, so I sized up to a Medium in this pic.

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016

The next batch of pics is from my first online order...many items weren't available in my store, so I took advantage of free shipping to try out more stuff for you.

This is the same top as the red 'tunic' above...but this time, sized down in Petites. It's a great flowy shape and material, and so cute with jeans or skirts. And speaking of jeans...I tried these last week too, but ordered them in Petite for a shorter length...and adore them! So soft and stretchy, and perfect length for booties!

Fit Tip: I'm wearing an XSP in the top and 26P in the jeans.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

Oops, I ordered my favorite tee in a new color. I can't resist the soft cotton and perfect scoop neck. These jeans are new to the sale, too, and fit like a glove, with no bootie-gap!

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I've tried several draped cardigans...just waiting until I found the right one. Well, it's safe to say this is it, because I've worn it every night this week! It's the same maker as my lounging cardi (that Little Miss constantly steals from me!), but with a better fit for wearing in public. So basically I get to feel as cozy as I do at home, while at the grocery store. Or the movies. Or out for tacos. Can a cardi feel like heaven? Yes ma'am, it can.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I love a good shirtdress, and this one is a lightweight rayon, with a built-in slip. The colors make it easy for dressing up with black heels, or down with booties and sandals.

Fit Tip: I had to size up to avoid pulling across the hips.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I tried this crossover sweater on for you last week, but my usual size was a tad snug in the arms, and showed a little too much belly. Sizing up to a small was definitely a good call! This smoky blue is a pretty shade, too.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

Obviously I can't get enough of this top...here it is again paired with a great-fitting a-line skirt. The pleat detail creates a fun asymmetrical look that keeps it from being too basic.

Fit Tip: I'm wearing an XSP in the top, and regular 0 in the skirt. Obviously a petite skirt would be shorter, but I prefer knee-length for more versatility.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I can't tell you how much I love this dress...another piece I shared with you last week, but required a different size. My usual 0 was a bit snug across the butt, and this size 2 is a tad long in the arms. Between the collar, cuffs, and scallop edge though, there are just too many great details to not keep it.

And I'd never guess these shoes weren't Kate Spade! They may look it (and are truly comfy), but the price definitely says differently! Mom and I both got a pair.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I had high hopes for this tunic...the description indicated it was extra long for leggings. And while I loved the silky-soft fabric, my usual size was too snug across the butt, but too long to wear as a shirt. It definitely has potential (and more great colors), just be sure to size up one if you even the smallest amount of bootie. And have your iron ready.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

I'm a military jacket junkie, so I had to try this new one...definitely an interesting twist on the traditional field jacket! It's a lightweight, almost shirt-like material, and long enough to wear with leggings. If you're hot-natured, or in a mild climate, I'd definitely consider it!

Fit Tip: I cinch the drawstrings at the waist and tie in place to create more of a waistline.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

Okay...last one!! And it's a goodie because I'm obsessed with all three pieces of this outfit! The top has enough sass to be perfect for a night out, but doesn't look like you're wearing your daughter's club clothes. The jeans are a great light rinse with just enough distressing and a fun rough hem (I cuffed mine up because of the long length, but left the hem exposed). And the booties are the perfect combination of edgy and dressy.

Fit Tip: All three pieces are true to size, I'm wearing an XS in the top, size 26 jeans, and usual size in the booties.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

Now I just need the temperatures to drop about 50-degrees so I can wear more of this great stuff!! Believe it or not, I still have more things to show you....but that will have to wait until next week because if I say 'darling,' 'comfy,' or 'perfect' one more time, I might gouge my own eye out. So what are your favorites? What are you grabbing from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale today?!? Happy weekend, lovebugs!

  2. I love the detail on the cobalt blue dress, it looks very figure flattering. The black and white dress is adorable and the asymmetrical black and white skirt is very eye catching. Love your choices and some day may need to spend some time in Nordstroms and not just walk through to get in to Willow Bend!

  3. Cute stuff! I stocked the tent dress until my size showed up again and ordered it! I was up at 2 am first day of early access to make sure I got a barefoot dreams circle cardigan. I've also worn it every night since it arrived. I got the stone color and loooove it! there wasn't a working link to the plaid shirt dress. What brand is it?

  12. Loved this post. Your Mom is so beautiful! Her haircut is so cute too and very age appropriate. I liked all the outfits on her except the ruffled trimmed cardigan. Just my opinion, but it looked too girly. I hope you purchased the entire outfit from the tunic, favorite legging, open booties picture. That looks great on you!

  14. Did you end up keeping the military jacket? I got it in the mail yesterday and still haven't quite figured out what to do with the strings in the back lol! I'm only 5'2", so they look particularly strange. ;) I'm thinking of cutting the strings so I can tie a much more tightly "bow" so-to-speak... just wondering if you have any creative ideas?!

    1. Which military jacket...I've shown a few. But I like to cinch the waist of my military jackets, then tie the strings that hang so they aren't too long. I wouldn't hesitate to cut them if they bothered me though! xo
