Dressing Room Diaries

Cheers to Friday, friends! I hope this week has been good to you! I've been nursing my kids through the longest Summer colds on record #exaggerator and they repaid me by passing it on to me. Ugh, don't you hate Summer colds?! Actually, I think all the excitement of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is to blame. ;)

I hadn't planned on doing a Dressing Room Diaries post this week, but y'all keep asking for more, and I keep finding more great stuff to review....so here we are, with another round (see my others here).

You know the drill...the shots aren't good, the lighting is bad, my hair is usually past it's expiration, and many of the items aren't a good fit for me...but it's real life, real girl, real clothes...and hopefully helpful for you to see them this way, instead of perfectly styled on a model.

And yep, Mama Sugarplum came, too! Let's get after it, shall we?

Sidenote: Everything fits true-to-size unless I indicate otherwise. And fyi, I'm 5'4"-ish, 120 pounds-ish, with a slight pear shape. My usual size is an XS/0. Mama Sugarplum is 5'2", with an hourglass figure. Her usual size is M/8.

My mom actually spotted this funnel neck sweater, and encouraged me to try it on...and I loved it! It's different than a typical pullover sweater, and makes a great top layer for winter outfits.

I paired mine with a light top for more contrast, but Mom went with a darker layer for a dressier look.  I love how the over-the-knee boots make the whole thing a little edgy, too.

On Mama SP: Funnel Neck Sleeveless Sweater (similar for less) | Jeans | Cut-Out Booties

This knit dress is a darling, year-round keeper. The material is thick enough to pair with tights in winter, or wear with heels in warmer months...and the shape is so comfy and flattering. Obviously Mama SP liked it on me, too.

Fit Tip: This brand runs small on me, and I sized up to a 4.

Fit-and-Flare Knit Dress

Mom doesn't wear a lot of skirts, but I insisted she try this faux-wrap and it fit her like a glove. She paired it with her favorite top and pumps from the sale (reviewed those here), and the whole outfit easily transitions to Winter by adding tights.

We both oohed-and-aahed when I tried this camel sweater vest on, but it felt a tad large for my frame. But I adored the color, big pockets, and hood.

Fit Tip: It's one-size only, but probably best for size 4-14.

Hooded Open VestSide-Slit Sweater | Ankle Distressed Jeans | Cut-Out Booties

The ruffle hem of this sweater is really cute, and a great length for wearing with jeans or slacks, but I found the material a little thin.

Ruffle Hem SweaterAnkle Distressed Jeans | Cut-Out Booties

This side-slit sweater is a great basic, but because of the boatneck, it's best worn alone as opposed to layered over a button-up. Fortunately, the material is soft enough to wear against your skin.

Fit Tip: I'm wearing an XS, but it was a bit snug across the bottom, so I'd recommend sizing up one.

Another great sweater vest....this one in a chunky knit and cute shawl collar. It's one-size, as well, but fit me fine...and you can't beat the price. It'd be so cute over a striped tee or plaid button-up.

They are calling this one a coat, but I much prefer it worn as a blazer, maybe swapping out the leather tie for an actual belt. It's a great work staple, but equally cute with booties or tall boots. And the color is gorgeous for Fall.

Oops, sorry about the eyes-closed pic, Mom! I literally take one shot of each item when doing these posts, and don't check the photos until later!

Hi Sugarplum | Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2016

This dress would make a great Work to Weekend...of course it's sassy worn with heels, but add a blazer and pumps and you're office ready! The side cut-out is a fun, unexpected bit of sass on an otherwise simple dress.

High-Low Shift Dress

I really wanted this sweater to be a winner, but the material felt cheap and the fit a little tight across the bum.

It's hard to see how darling this dress is since I'm wearing the wrong size, but you can see the pretty floral print and fun pink sash. And the back has a cute cut-out, too. It's pretty much the perfect shower/wedding/brunch/work dress that you'd never tire of wearing.

Fit Tip: It runs true-to-size, they just didn't have my size in-store.

Floral Fit-and-Flare Dress | Similar Tassel Sandal

This next batch is from an online order, and never mind the slumbering teenager in the back. He'd just returned home from a week at camp, and didn't wake up once during my mirror session!

This turtleneck poncho had me ready for Fall the second I pulled it on. Paired with a longer tank, it's perfect for leggings, but so cute with jeans and booties, too. Also, it has actual armholes, so you can move your arms freely...I'm not a fan of the ponchos that just drape over your arms, they make me feel like a T-Rex.

This lace-trim dress is a bit boho for my style, but the crochet back is super cute. It comes in two floral patterns too, and is fully lined.

My addiction to these tees is borderline embarrassing, but the fit and length is so good, the fabric so soft, and they launder beautifully.

Fit Tip: I'm wearing an XS in the tee. The booties are also Fall perfection (both mom and I are wearing them throughout this entire post), but run a half-size large.

I tried this striped pullover on in the first round of DRD, but it was too large...here it is in the XXS, and I love it! The jeans are a little long on me, but you can see in this post that I just cuffed them to preserve the exposed hem.

Striped Pullover SweaterDistressed Jeans

I love a good plaid shirtdress, and how easily it transitions from late Summer to Fall with the addition of booties and a military jacket. In fact, I did just that in this Now & Later post! This one is a soft flannel material, but sturdy enough to hold its shape.

Another great shirtdress option, this one with a flattering a-line shape, and fun popover fit. I love the little collar and pockets. These block-heel sandals are another great transitional shoe for Summer and Fall.

Hi Sugarplum | Dressing Room Diary

This dress is perfect in every way...the thick material, fun pattern and color combo, and flattering neckline. The back is darling, too, and the length is grown-woman appropriate. I left without it, but may need to order for our beach trip next month. What do you think?

Halter Shift Dress | Hoop Earrings

Oh man, this post has seasonal ADD...but here we are back to plaid! This blouse is silky soft and lightweight, with a longer back hem. I love the fun Sporty Spice look of it with my favorite sneakers, but it's just as cute with boots.

Fit Tip: I'm wearing a Small in these pics, but would prefer my usual size.

The stripes and color-combo are what drew me to this dress, but sadly I don't have the boobs to pull it off. For those of you with young boobs, and firm butts, this dress is for you!

Wrap Slip Dress | Hoop Earrings

This fit and length of these pants is my favorite, and I love the built-in support on the top (no additional sports bra needed!). This brand is hands-down my favorite, so it's pretty much the only activewear I tried at the sale.

Fit Tip: I wear my usual size in Zella pants, but always size up one in their tops and jackets.

Crossback Tank | Capri Pants

This jacket has fun thumb-holes and mesh back, and I love the gathering on the front. Perfect for those days when you never actually change out of your 'workout' gear.

This felt a little strange trying on pajamas, but that's just how dedicated to y'all I am!! ;) This pj set is so soft and light, and definitely a step up from my usual! Considering I change into pajamas the second I walk in the door, I should probably make sure some of them are actually cute.

Fit Tip: I sized up to a small, and the cami doesn't have built-in support...I'm wearing my actual bra to make the pics PG. #nationalgeographiccalled

Jersey Pajama Set

Um, I'm thinking now I should have done a better job of grouping these photos by category...but it's too late to go back now, so hang with me a little longer!!

This ribbed number is a nice thick and stretchy material, with fun cut-outs. The longer sleeve makes it suitable for so many occasions, as well as flattering.

Fit Tip: I sized up to a 4.

Gorgeous color and shape on this crepe dress, but again, I had trouble filling it out. Perhaps sizing down would help my case.

Considering my lack of boobs, I sure am hell-bent on showing them off in the low v-necks I keep falling for! This oversized pullover is high on my list, and I can't wait to wear it with a cami, or layered over a plaid or gingham shirt.

Fit Tip: The sweater runs large, I'm wearing an XXS.

And finally, Little Miss never misses the sale and wanted in on the action....these are the darling things she chose for herself...all run true-to-size, and get a full 10-year-old thumbs up!!

Sidenote: Are you dying over the kid version of my beloved kitten cardi?!?!?!

Hi Sugarplum / Dressing Room Diaries

Whew!! That wraps another doozy round...I hope these posts are helpful, and you enjoy reading them as much as I love creating them for you!! You can catch up on all of them here.

What are your favorites? What fun things have you scooped up for yourself? Happy weekend, lovebugs!

    1. I forgot to ask about the converse... Will you keep wearing the white into fall? I want a pair but wondering if the grey would be a better fall color.

    2. Yes ma'am....I plan on wearing the white ones until I can no longer get away with no socks! Or until my desire to wear booties all the time takes over! ;) xo

  4. I feel like it is my duty to make a comment about the Baby Foot Exfoliation. This stuff is amazing!!!! It was totally gross/facinating a week later as my feet were peeling! My feet have never looked and felt better! I know I've used a lot of exclamation but serious this stuff is facinating!
Thank you for the great recommendation.
    Thanks again!

  7. Your mom is darling! Would love to see a close-up of her hair (front and back). I love seeing how you both style the same items. It helps me see how things can be age appropriate for me.

    1. Hopefully I can sweet talk her into the Dressing Room with me again soon, and I'll get better shots of her hair! In the meantime, check out my Mother's Day tea post a few months back...it has more pics of her! xo

  8. Oh.my.goodness. Love so many things here. (I do love your hair straight, btw). That hooded vest thingy needs to be in my closet!!! And that plaid tunic!! It feels so wrong to be looking at fall clothes when it's 98 degrees outside, but I said several weeks ago I was ready for fall clothes!!!

And Little Miss is adorable in her clothes. I wish my daughters liked shopping at the dept stores. One is all about Dick's Sporting Goods and the other is very brand specific...you know, Abercrombie, Holister..you get my point!!

  9. My 10yo daughter also picked out the mini kitty cardi! She was so excited that we'll be matching, and I'm glad she shares my style :) And always love these posts!

  11. I loved that red skirt and so wanted to keep it because of the pockets but they pooched out a little on me. I loved that Treasure & Bond sweater but agree..it ran large and I sent it back as well. And Sloan looks adorbs..I tried to get that first dress for my Carly Jo and she snubbed it.

  19. Hi Honey, You and your mom look so cute, more like sisters. I love the bl/wh dress...perfect on your good shape. Shopping big sales can almost be overwhelming. I like window shopping and thinking of something I already have that is similar...that helps when the sales come around. Bless you, xoxo, Susie

  20. Question! Are you wearing no show socks with those tan Vince Camuto booties? Or no socks? I got the black pair (and the grey pair...whoops! Dang sale!) but not sure what to do on the sock situation...?! In other news...I am STALKING those Vince Camuto peep toe booties in the tan color like a CRAZY PERSON!!!!! So kicking myself for not getting them sooner. #mighthavetopayfullprice

  21. You always look fabulous and these dressing room diaries are a favorite! I've always been hesitant ordering from Nordstrom because I don't have one nearby and can't try on anything! But this time I couldn't resist...hello fall style with sale prices! I ordered the side slit sweater in the green, the gray jeans (from last diary post) and the split neck mixed media tunic in navy! I'm so excited! A little splurge on this rainy day!
