One Dress | Day to Night

I wear jeans fairly often, but truthfully, skirts and dresses are my comfort zone. You see, I've got pretty significant junk in the trunk. Baby got back. Ba-donk-a-donk. Whatever you want to call it, I've got a lot going on back there. Always have.

I remember being teased about having a 'bubble butt' as far back as third grade. Seriously, I was barely 50 pounds, but there was a booty going on. I became self-conscious about it then, and the insecurity stuck with me through my adolescent and early-adult life. It wasn't until I met Mr. SP that I realized it could be an asset. #seewhatIdidthere

But for the most part, I still dress to downplay it, with lots of fit-and-flare dresses, and a-line skirts. Maybe it's a modesty thing, or still tinges of insecurity, but I feel more comfortable in those silhouettes, not to mention, they are always flattering.

But the older I get, the more secure I feel with who I am, and what I have...and I think it's healthy to sometimes jump outside the safety net. When my sweet friend Megan posted this dress, I immediately loved it, but really hesitated because of it's 'body conscience' shape. I knew Mr. SP would love to see me in something more fitted...so I went for it.

You know my clothes must play double and triple duty, so I made sure I could make it work Day and Night!

And friends, we have a winner! The body-conscience shape makes it great for evenings out, but the cotton knit makes it easy to dress down...not to mention, crazy comfy. I did size up so it wouldn't hug every last curve and ripple, and to allow room for tacos. #priorities

This dress is so universal, I could easily do a {5 Ways} post. I've worn it a few different ways already, but this is by far my favorite 'Day' combination.

The outfit is just as comfortable and easy to throw on as shorts or yoga pants, but looks so much more polished and pulled together. Who cares if you're only going to the grocery store or sitting in the school carpool line...I always feel better, and therefore, happier, when I've made an effort. Even when I have dirty hair and no makeup.

Now let's jazz this baby up for Date Night...I knew Mr. SP would approve of it!

We got our son (my official photographer!) to snap some pics of us before heading out to dinner...and of course we had the obligatory Maggie photobomb.

Talk about comfort zones...Mr. SP is the king of uber-relaxed jeans! #showmeyourasset He never wants to go jean shopping, so I ordered him several options from Nordstrom (they have a huge online selection, with tons of hard-to-find sizes) and he actually fell for these. They are still relaxed, but look more fitted. #halleluiah

The man is incapable of walking past people shooting hoops without getting in on the action. Or making funny faces, apparently.

We all have things we don't like about our bodies, but when I think about the places my body has taken me, and the children it's carried for me, it's hard to feel anything but pride and respect. But that doesn't mean I won't squeeze it in a pair of Spanx! ;)

Have you stepped outside your comfort zone lately when it comes to your body? I'd encourage you to try it...you might be surprised by how empowering it feels! Happy weekend, love bugs!

  5. Love your style! Copied your long black skirt outfit from last week exactly. Figured the "twinning" wouldn't be a problem since I am 5'10 and live in Boston area! But smile because your influence travels far!

  7. Hot mama! That dress looks killer on you. I would love a little junk in my trunk, but countless squats and lunges aren't working :)

  8. So cute! I was that kid too, with the bubble butt. Did you have to cinch your pants under your belt in order to accommodate your booty, like I did? Urgh. Finally grew into it, then had babies and now I think it looks normal (probably because gravity got to it - TMI?!) I recently went outside my comfort zone and wore a bikini on vacation. My teenage son told me he thought I was too old to wear a bikini so I told him I wasn't wearing it I was ROCKING it. It didn't go over so well with him but it made me feel better! The dress looks great -- good for you!

    1. Oh yes, back in the high-waisted jean era, my jeans always bunched up in the back. #notcute And how funny that I'm thrilled gravity is taking hold of it a little?! And you go with that bikini...teenage sons don't like to think of us as girls. ;) xo

  10. Gray is seriously my favorite color, but I always feel weird about wearing gray and brown together. Is this just something I should get over.... Otherwise I'm always stuck wearing gray shoes (flip flops/boots) with my casual gray outfits. It's pretty stressful..... your thoughts?

    1. I have lots of gray, and not a gray shoe! I pair it with black, brown (lighter shades and cognac), metallic, navy and colors. The only color I won't pair with gray is chocolate brown...but only bc the tones blend too much. So yes, get over it, girl! ;) xoxo
