{The Master} Design Options

Thanks for the encouragement yesterday, I feel slightly less crazy for starting our bedroom makeover this week! Although the kids are now requesting to put their mattresses on the floor! #keepdreamingkid

So while I've decided on the layout (see it here), I'm still not certain of the exact design direction I want to go. I know the nightstand/dressers will be wood, and the bed will be upholstered...but there are a few options I love.

1) Keep our existing gray/blue walls, and add drama with a velvet headboard in a rich navy blue.

2) You know I love taking chances, but a bed is something we'll have for years and years...so maybe we stick with a more neutral gray...and add some zhush with the linens and rug.

3) Another way to add drama with a neutral bed is with dark walls. I absolutely love this combination, but I don't know if I'm up to painting our 16-foot pitched ceiling anytime soon!

4) The final option I'm considering is a tall natural linen bed, that would look good with our existing wall color, or darker walls if I ever go there....and I can jazz it up with floral drapes that coordinate with our current bedding (which I still love!).

Kind of all over the map, right?! But Santa is bringing us a bed, and wants to know which one! So which design gets your vote? You can see the Before shots of our room here...and it's current state here.

a) Navy Bed & Neutral Walls
b) Gray Bed & Neutral Walls
c) Natural Bed & Dark Walls
d) Natural Bed & Walls with Floral Drapes

  3. Hi Cassie...
Love the neutral bed... I'd go for darker walls...we are at our daughters house guest room with BM Revere pewter( gray)? Also I just redid our bedroom with large 3 drawer chests from Bassett hgtv collection..they have stripes across drawers..with an off white surround... Love the extra room on top and in drawers and we did built ins on opposite wall with room for lots of storage and a tv. No other furniture. So great!,, we have a small master...in a 1970s Houston house!!
Holly Rigby...Spring, Tx you will love the big dresser side tables!! Good idea

  4. Hi, Cassie! Hate to say it because painting IS a pain but definitely C. It's the one that is immediately eye catching, and without thought, is the winner. Good luck! No matter what you choose will be wonderful because you have such great style!

  5. D!!! I love your current bedding and those drapes are so pretty

  6. I like A. Navy all the way! I think you could definitely use your current bedding with that look. Navy and coral are GREAT!

  7. I love the last two! There is so much more depth, texture and I love the colour contrast of the dark walls and the floral curtains! It will be beautiful either way :)

  8. Love both C and D. The dark walls in C are gorgeous but I love the brightness of D. Either would be a win, in my opinion.

  9. I liked A or B. I thought A had a glamorous look.

  10. I like the first one and I 100% need those nightstands from the first board. WHERE are they from?! That's exactly what I've been looking for!

    1. I know!! I've been looking for something similar!! I want to know too!!

  11. My vote is for the final choice. Buying furniture is like an investment and you want to invest in something that can change with your decor. Buy your investments in a neutral tone and get your deals with fun statement pieces.

  12. To me A seems the most like you! Besides, I want to know where you found those nightstands-Good luck on your final decision-

  13. I like D overall, but I also like the idea of going darker on the walls. Don't let high ceilings foil your design plans! You can do it girl!

  14. I like D. It' the most versatile bed option and would look great with dark walls. I'd definitely paint before putting that bed in though - it looks like it would be difficult to move once it's in the room.

  15. I like #3 - it's neutral enough (walls and headboard) that you won't feel tied down to a color, but you can still dress it up with rugs, pillows, artwork, etc.

I also am doing a master redo. I'm taking all of next week off so that I can paint our bedroom and bathroom. I'm going to do a greige on the walls and a darker color on the vaulted ceiling for some drama. :)

  16. A...I love navy, and it's still a neutral in my book!

  17. I am totally drawn to color, so A would be my vote. I understand your concern about the bed color though. I that case, my vote would go to D. Such a big decision! I'm excited to see what you do. I did a mini makeover of our space this year. We have a big paneled bed And I love the upholstery look but couldn't justify the cost of a new bed. I ended up upholstering two panels to fit in the headboard and used heavy duty Velcro strips to hold them on. It looks so good, but I'm still crushing on fully upholstered headboards! Good luck with your decision!

  18. Whatever look you choose, I love the bench at the end of the bed!

  19. D is my first choice and C is a close 2nd.

  20. I love B & C! I definitely like the zebra rug in both pictures but I prefer the nightstands in C.

  21. D! So fun, thanks for the vote! Merry Christmas :)

  22. Jumping on the D bandwagon!

    ReplyDelete
  23. i love all of them, but i think b or d would be great in keeping walls and beds neutral (though i love those dark walls and to me they are a neutral!) but they also feel most like you.

  24. I love the navy bed - and navy is a neutral! Merry Christmas!

  25. Love D! all are great though and can't wait to see!

  26. C or D would be my choice...love the rug in C and the headboard in D! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Love C! Where did you find those nightstands? Looking for something similar for a nursery.

    ReplyDelete
  28. D! Can't go wrong with a neutral bed and that leaves all the easier to change, more affordable things to spice up the room.

    ReplyDelete
  29. D for sure! C second choice. I think you'd regret a navy bed... Kind of looks like a navy coffin or something?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like B for you...but to be honest...C is almost a mirror of my own master!!! (minus the zebra rug)

    ReplyDelete
  31. A! I love the navy bed and the fact that it's colorful without losing the restful sanctuary feeling a master bedroom should have.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm for A or C, with C being my preference, but A if you don't want to paint the walls.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm really loving C, but don't think you'll go wrong with any of these! So excited for you! Our bedroom is my top priority project for 2015 too! (although it's been on "the list" for the past 3 years...)

    ReplyDelete
  34. All are pretty, but C and D are my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  35. D but beware of those drapes. I purchased them, and they are THIN!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love them all but if I had to pick, I'd go with B or D. Good luck! Can't wait to follow your journey...

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love almost everything about option d, but feel the rug needs to be darker or have significant color to help anchor the room (think rug pattern from option c in colors to compliment the curtains, or magenta....)

    ReplyDelete
  38. A all the way! After the initial view of A the other 3 seem subpar in my opinion. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  39. A or C. I am all about some drama. I would not want it to look like everyone elses and to me B is what EVERYbody is doing. I love D, but it too could come right off any department store. So. Either the dramatic bed or the dramatic walls. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. A or C are my favorites. However, I really think C fits your personality the best. Can't wait to see the make over documented.

  41. My vote is for the neutral bed and floral curtains. That said, may I throw out a thought? If you do a simple rectangular headboard then you can easily change the fabric on it with a slipcover or a staple gun. It is not as dramatic but is easier to hang different art above it and can change on a whim.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Cassie, I give you option E. The bed from D the dressers and lamps from C, the bench from D, your current bedding, & navy walls. As for the rug I think the chevron has peaked and the kiln and hide rugs for me are to harsh for a master retreat. I would look for something "softer" either in texture, a flokati or in design maybe a floral in blues and coral.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love the first one with the navy bed. But I also know that I like to change out bedding and curtains on a regular basis, so I can see getting a more neutral bed, since it is a long time use investment.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I like options B and C. Furniture is a major purchase and I tend to go more neutral.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I love A, B and C. I have a navy upholstered bed so now option A is giving me ideas to spruce up my master! I would love to know where the dressers are from.

    ReplyDelete
  46. A is lovely & regal. A & D draw me in. When I look at B & C, my eyes can't find a focal/resting point. Is that odd?

    ReplyDelete
  47. D or bust!!!!!! Ddddddd!!!! Alllllllll dayyyyyyyy D!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think D looks most like you and your style.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I like the bed in option D with the dark, dramatic walls of C. C's night tables are by far the prettiest.

  50. Sherwin Williams has named 'Coral Reef' the color of the year for 2015, and this article I just read this morning says it will be a trend with all blues, especially navy!

So my choice is A. D is pretty, and looks like you, but too feminine for a room to share with a hunky husband.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We still want to know where the nightsstands are from in the first picture? Love them.

    1. So sorry Denise!! I emailed those readers back...but forgot to come post here for those who are 'no-reply.' Those are from Ethan Allen...a little pricey for me, but I was just using them as examples. :) Hope this helps!! xo
