Travel Style: Fall Edition

Last week I shared how I pack for a week-long trip in a carry-on sized suitcase. Today is all about the personal carry-on, and my travel uniform.

Hi Sugarplum | Travel Style

In order to keep things simple, and adhere to airline restrictions, I use a large tote as my personal carry-on (as opposed to a carry-on tote and my purse). I tuck the contents of my purse (wallet, phone, gum, sunglasses, etc) in the pockets of the large bag, then once I arrive, I transfer them to the small crossbody bag I packed in my suitcase.

I love the extra compartment on the bottom of this weekender bag...perfect for tucking magazines and my reader, or even an extra pair of shoes. Other items I always have handy when traveling are hand sanitizer, hand cream, chapstick, cozy socks, ear plugs, headphones, charger, and comb. I usually tuck a scarf and light jacket or sweater in, as well.

Now let's talk about my travel uniform. As you saw in the packing post, often times I pack the tall boots, using them as extra storage. But if it's a fairly short flight (one where I won't need or want to take my shoes off), then I wear them to free up space in my bag. Comfort goes hand-in-hand with style for me when traveling, so I choose a flat boot like these from Sole Society. These would be a great option, as well.

Hi Sugarplum | Travel Style

I almost always bring a hat, regardless of season, and wear it, to avoid being squashed in my bag. The goal is to have two bags total...the rolling suitcase, and a personal carry-on. It makes check-in, security lines, and deplaning so much simpler.

My travel uniform for long-haul flights is a little different, and you can read about it here. Do you have a travel uniform? What's in your carry-on bag?

  3. Do you put your camera in the carryon, or does Mr. Sugarplum have it in his backpack? I always have trouble packing the camera. The carryon you link looks like it could double for a camera bag if you put a scarf or sweater around it for packing safety.

    1. Ooooh, good question! I totally forgot to address the camera! I usually keep it in my carry-on tote...but we recently switched to a compact, travel-friendly, camera for our trips. It's so much lighter and doesn't take up any space. Search 'samsung camera' in my posts...I did a post about it, and gave one away. xo

    1. It is a great bag! But fyi...it has a funny smell when it first arrives!!?? But a little airing out and you're good to go! I guess it's the vegan leather ;)

  5. Love the travel bag! I always wear an outfit that is in layers especially going for colder to warmer climate - and I always wear a light weight scarf on the plane. I have packed a pair of sandals and yoga capris in my carry on for a quick change at the airport in a warmer climate - makes travel to the hotel more comfortable.

  6. That hat is amazing! I love the color. I am obsessed with packing posts. Like, really obsessed. I love, love, love packing and reading about packing. It kicks by wanderlust into high gear! Thanks for introducing me to that carry on tote- I've been wanting a Lo and Sons OMG bag, but I just can't justify the price. This is much better!

    1. So thrilled you love them! As for a men's edition...if it were anything like Mr. SP, it'd go like this "2 jeans, 2 shorts, 1 sweatshirt, 2 tees, 1 button down. Done." ;)

  10. I love the bag you featured in this post! I'm looking for a stylish yet functional baby bag. Do you think this bag would be a good fit? Does the bag have a lot of storage pockets on the inside? Is the bag fairly heavy before filling it? I'd love to hear you feedback before placing my order. Thanks in advance!!!:)

    1. Hi Katie!! I have the smaller of the two bags like this one, and I think it's a good option! There are a few compartments on the inside side, and a zipper pouch...and the section on the bottom would be great for the changing pad, wipes and diaper. The liner is a cute stripe, too. It's not real leather, but that might be a benefit for cleaning up drips and spills! Oh, and not heavy at all!

  11. oh my word cassie! I just checked out the satchel - well I just bought it, a purse, a wallet, a necklace and a pr of shoes! I had to make my 20% off for signing up worth it! I luv it all!

  12. The hat is so cute! However... do you wear in onboard the plane as well? I would think it could get squashed in the overhead compartment.

    1. No, I take the hat off once I'm on the plane...I'd feel silly wearing it. Usually I just hold it on my lap, or place it on top of my bag at my feet. Sometimes it does get trampled a bit, but not as badly as it would if I tried to pack it. xoC

  13. Yes, I'm wondering, too, if your hair is squished when you have to remove it (or maybe you don't) on the plane....you are so very fashionable in such a casual way....please tell us how tall you are...I've noticed you wear xsmall in so many items but, because I'm short, I'm not sure I could pull off your style...any suggestions? Thanks so much! Janie

    1. Yes ma'am, I am on the vertically challenged side! ;) Just under 5'4". But I think you can pull off any style at any height...as long as you have the proportions rights. And as long as my hair is freshly washed, the hat doesn't impact it too much when taking it off and on. But I usually have a pretty messy look anyway, so who'd notice?! ;)

    2. You are right....it's all about the proportions. I'm 5'1" so you're really not that much taller....Everything just looks better on you!!....Would you also be showing us how you style your hair anytime soon?...Such a cute haircut...would love to duplicate...

    3. Yes! A hair tutorial is in the works!!!

  15. Such good tips, and that hat is darling on you! And I love those boots! Now, I do have a question. What do you put in your travel bag if on your way to the Temple of Doom?

  16. LOVE this bag! I ordered it last week and just received it - it's perfection! Now to find somewhere to take it to! Love all your tips! Thanks!

  17. Ok, you are too darn tootin' cute!! I am loving that tote bag. I realized when traveling that I needed a nice leather tote bag to carry everything and this is such a great option. You look beautiful!

  18. Great suggestions for travel. I always over pack and I'm trying to change that mentality. You mentioned you attend blog seminars. I'm a new blogger and I've been looking for seminars to attend. Please share any information you have on any upcoming events. My blog is www.mjonesstyle.com and I live in Texas too.

  19. Great tips Cassie! I wish I traveled more so I could justify getting that sweet bag...

  20. I'm loving the Indiana Jones look 😊. Your travel outfit looks very similar to mine, and I always add a cardigan or blazer to keep warm on the plane!

  21. Cassie after reading this post I feel inspired. I usually take the proverbial "everything but the kitchen sink" when I travel. You know "just incase". I almost have a phobia for not taking "this, that, and the other". That said, I have to pull in the reins and downsize.

Your weekender bag is perfect. I clicked on the link and they have (incase other readers are as smitten as I am w/ it) a 20% off offer. That makes it beyond reasonably priced. A real plus because my luggage items always get so beat off in a short time. Such goodness!

  22. Love your travel bag! Your outfit is absolutely adorable too! I wish I looked that good when I travel! ;)
