Western White House

Aside for the ten years we were in Nashville, I've lived my entire life in Texas. A big, bold, gorgeous, glorious, vast state. I know first-hand the stereotypes that go along with being a Texan, and let me tell you, we don't all ride horses, and our daddies aren't all in the oil business. I do, however, know several people who own cattle. And longhorns. But I digress.

As I flipped through the latest issue of Architectural Digest, I was stunned by the images of George and Laura Bush's weekend home in Crawford, Texas. I knew they had a ranch in Central Texas, and I guess I was guilty of assuming it was rugged, and full of leather, deer heads and barbed wire....basically, stereotypical Texas decor. But Texas is as modern as she is rugged, and as sophisticated as she is country. And politics aside, the Bushes created the perfect balance of all Texas has to offer.

Even the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas is chic.

Are you surprised by the style and grace of their Texas ranch? What's your favorite part of their home? I love all the windows, looking out over the fields of bluebonnets.

  2. So lovely! I am moving to the Fort Worth area in about 3 weeks. (Hubby was transferred.) It's been great fun to look at the amazing houses on Zillow. We still don't know where we will be living and are open to suggestions. :)

    1. Congrats on your move...so fun and exciting! I hope it all goes smoothly! I went to college in Ft. Worth, and just adore that small town/big city. xo

    2. I live in Mid-Cities, which I love because I am halfway to Dallas and Fort Worth. I'm also really close to Southlake and Grapevine. I don't know if you have kids, but the school systems in Southlake, Keller, Grapevine, and Colleyville are excellent. I lived here before, moved back home (to New England!) and had to move back because I love DFW so much.

  4. This blog post has made me very sad. I left my beloved Texas 2 years ago. While I absolute LOVE my new town (small 'burb outside of Philly), I miss Texas so very much.

  6. I had an image in my head of a cabin with deer heads on the wall as well. I love the doors and the views are amazing. It's such a pretty area of the state.

  7. First, I love George W. Bush - I thought he was a tremendous president, and I think Laura is the epitome of class. I hadn't seen these images - thank you for sharing! (I too, figured there would be more leather & rustic decor.) The windows are amazing, and I love how they have sitting areas, and the pool tucked into the natural landscape. And I love the plates around the buffet in the dining room - they're a nice pop of color. So neat to look at!

  15. While I could envision the house with leather, cowhides, antlers and such for George...Laura is much too classy for the entire house to have that feel. It is gorgeous!

  16. I like that the house itself is stone. That's what I miss about living in Austin - stone homes/buildings are the norm. Here in Dallas, everything is brick.
