Talking About Hair

Today we're taking a break from paint, and talking hair! If there's one thing most girls have in common, it's the love/hate relationship we have with our hair. If you're like me, your hair saga goes something like this:

Grow hair out
Get sick of it!
Chop hair off!!
Love it, wonder why you ever grew it long?
Regret cutting it, wish it would grow faster!!
Then as soon as you reach perfect ponytail length, chop it off again??

And don't get me started on products and heating tools, not to mention the time! I have such a hodge-podge collection of half-used bottles, that I really have no idea what is best for my hair. But I do get a lot of emails about my hair (thank you, by the  way!), so today I thought I'd share my single most important hair product....Dry Shampoo!

This will gross some of you out, but I don't wash my hair every day. Or even every other day. (Settle down, I do bathe every day!!!) I try to combat all the stress it gets from styling, by not washing and blow-drying too often. It also helps to prolong the life of my, ahem, color. Yes, I do get some help in the blonde department. And sometimes hair just needs a little refresh, not a full wash!

Dry shampoo is the only way I'm able to skip shampooing, since it absorbs excess oil and removes odors. It is also my biggest morning time saver. (Hence why it's also one of the Top Hair Products for School)  The market has no shortage of pricey dry shampoos to choose from, but I'm mostly a drugstore girl when it comes to my hair products (except conditioner, I spring for the good stuff!). So when the nice people at TRESemme asked me to review their new, affordable, TRESemm√© Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, I jumped at the chance!

The first thing I noticed is the fresh smell. The second was how seamlessly it blended with my hair. Some dry shampoos leave a powdery finish, creating a Grandma Butterworth look. Not cute. And certainly not discreet! I sprayed the TRESemme Fresh Start in my roots, waited a few minutes before combing it through, then I had fresh hair that looked like it'd just been washed!

Here are some tips for using dry shampoo successfully:
  • Do shake vigorously before use and in between spray bursts for best results.
  • Do lift sections of dry hair and spray lightly at roots
  • Do spray in short bursts, holding 8-12 inches from head
  • Don’t spray it like hair spray (all over and continuously)
  • Do leave in for 1-2 minutes.
  • Do use fingertips or a brush to distribute product evenly
YouTube celebrity Elle Fowler made a cute video showing how to use the dry shampoo (skip to the 6 minute mark if you value your sanity):

I'm excited to finally find an affordable dry shampoo, and can't wait to try out the full line of TRESemme Fresh Start shampoos. Have you tried this product yet? Are you a daily shampooer, or do you skip?

  1. Thanks for the review and the recommendation. I tend to wash my hair every day, although lately I've noticed I can go every other day. I've been using baby powder in place of dry shampoo b/c my hairdresser recommended a $35 bottle!!! Glad to have a found a resonably priced dry shampoo.

  2. Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely have to try this. I wash my hair every other deay because i'm pretty much a grease monkey after day 2. Maybe this will help :)

  3. I'd love to try this, but wonder...I have that kind of hair and style (short) that needs rewetting in order to make it manageable and look like I didn't just roll out of bed...and it needs tons of products (voluminzing mouse and hairspray to stay) I am thinking I'd end up with a sticky hot mess.

  4. Thank you for the tip. I've been really tempted to try dry shampoo and hey tresemme is an affordable way to "test the water" errr... dry water for my dry shampoo that is. Also, thank you for the tip on the video. I did need the tutorial but not more Elle time. Like, I'll try it tomorrow.

  5. Yes I will be trying this for sure. And I wash twice a week (gasp!!!). My hair is really long and I hate blow drying--I'm about at the chop it all off stage.

  6. I need this! I use baby powder, but this sounds even better. Your hair always looks great. I'm 20 and get help in the blonde department too (: hehe

  7. I don't think I've ever used dry shampoo however, I think I might need to pick up a bottle of this. Thanks for your honesty about the product and "how" you really take care of your hair. Sometimes I don't wash hair daily...well, especially when I'm getting ready for a special ocassion I like to set it hot rollers and it works better with "dirty" hair. Lol. Too funny I know but, its the honest to goodness truth. Thanks for sharing. Oh, and don't cut your hair - let it grow!

  8. I've used this a few times when I don't want to wash my hair even though it needs it. I don't wash my hair every day, the only exception is if I have exercise because of the sweat factor. This stuff makes my hair manageable enough but I don't think I have had the positive results you have.

  9. Thank you for the dry shampoo tips -I was using it all wrong & getting frustrated when my (already slightly grey) hair had this disgusting powdery film on it.

Against your better advice, I watched the entire Elle Fowler video, and I must now say my sanity IS somewhat shot. "Pinecone, did you have a nightmare?"

  10. I discovered their line a year and a bit ago and I love it! One of the best dry shampoos I've used!

  11. I am in the grow it out stage now, but I am sure I'll go chop it off again soon. I'm happy to hear that this dry shampoo works well. I can't live without dry shampoo! I currently use a pricier version, but would love to try this one out next!

  12. Ok I'm embarrassed to admit I don't use dry shampoo and I definitely don't wash my hair everyday, gross right???? I appreciate this post bc I am cheap when it comes to hair products and lazy! I will most def be buying the dry shampoo this week. And btw you do have good hair and good hair color- I can spot a bad blonde a mile away!

  13. I LOVE dry shampoo, it saves me! I swear by Batiste. You can get it at Ulta or other beauty supply stores. It is about 6.99 so not crazy expensive but I have tried a lot of them and this one is the best! Thanks for this feature...I feel not enough women know about dry shampoo!

  14. I've always wanted to try dry shampoo and I'll be picking this up ASAP!

They are smart to partner with you because you are so darn cute!!!

  15. I LOVE dry shampoo. Haven't tried this one yet. All of those photos of you are gorgeous! I like you in blue. I know it's about the hair though . . . great hair, too.

  16. I am not an every-day-washer either. I find my hair looks better one or two days after a wash and blow dry.
Haven't used dry shampoo as I've had a persistent fear of 'talcum smell'.. You may have convinced me to try it again.

Otherwise, hairspray works in the same way and can work magic on a ponytail day.

    xx C

  17. I'm glad you did this post because I had just about given up on dry shampoo. The one I currently use is so-so but I don't plan to buy again. I will definitely give this one a try. Thanks!

  18. Had to laugh when you told people not to get grossed out about the fact that you don't wash your hair every day. I just did a post on how I style my curly, actually...but I neglected to tell my readers that I have gone as much as 5 days without shampoo, dry or otherwise. Now, THAT would have grossed them out. Oh, the joy of hair that practically will not get greasy. : )

Love your writing style (content is great too, but I'm almost a style over substance kind of girl when it comes to blogs, and girl, you got sssstyle!)

    ~Abbie (Five days...5 ways)

Your comments are like popcorn with milk duds, I just can't quit them. Thanks for taking the time to share your positive thoughts! xoxo, cass
